  • Sosigenes’ Sister

Today we would call it ‘evidence-based public policy’. In 47BC, Julius Caesar saw the social and economic benefits of a common and correct calendar to be applied throughout the diverse and dynamic dominions of the Roman Empire. To proceed with the eponymous Julian calendar, he was advised by Sosigenes, an astronomer, about whom very little else is known. While technical refinements came about in subsequent centuries, Caesar’s foresight and strategic intent combined with Sosigenes’ empirical counsel brought about this transformative policy decision that delivered enduring public value.

If Sosigenes had a sister, then perhaps she also would tackle seemingly intractable problems that plague governments and impede social and economic prosperity. Evidence-based public policy invites disciplinary rigour, imagination and a facility to bring diverse perspectives to problem definition and policy formulation. Sosigenes’ sister has worked in government, consultancy, academia and not-for-profit sectors including an overseas stint in Ottawa, Canada. She is recognised as an expert in evidence-based health systems, corporate governance and postgraduate teaching with an extensive track record in peer-reviewed publications. Get ready for some new ideas for the public good that shake up the usual disciplinary constraints!
